Fauna recently celebrated her surprise 50th birthday party, compliments of her husband and painter of 30 years. Turning 30, and then 40, were not the milestone events she expected them to be, although she does recall an experience that made her aware of the aging process.
“My husband innocently informed me that he had kindly edited out my jowls on my 40th birthday party photo. Jowls? I had to look the word up in the dictionary!” (It’s the flesh under the lower jaw, especially when plump or flaccid.)
Now a successful Discount Stockbroker at age 50, she feels more empowered than ever. “I realize it’s up to me now to go for what I want, to be productive.” She lives passionately and enjoys music, art, nature, exhilaration of activity, friends, family, and food.
She still struggles with people’s perception and reactions to 50-plus women. “When you’re 50, you realize that 20 year-olds think ‘50’ means sick and ailing.” When it comes to her philosophy on aging and beauty, she feels a balance of self-care combined with an openness to enhancements is a realistic approach. |
